Manchester Mayhem recorded their first league win of the campaign in the British Para Ice Hockey League on Sunday evening, as the Widnes-based outfit hit their opponents from over the Pennines for six, with the Mayhem beating the Sheffield Steel Stings 6-0 at Widnes Ice Rink.

Pete Hagan handed out two home debuts in the squad. One was Fiona Naylor, who iced in the opening game down in Cardiff, while the other was GB Women’s International Nik Terrell, who was making her maiden bow in the BPIHL by wearing Mayhem colours.

It was a few weeks ago when Manchester lost 6-4 to the Cardiff Huskies on the road in their league opener, so playing at home against a transitioning Steel Stings side made it imperative to try and get a win on the board early.

The hosts had to work hard to find a breakthrough in the contest, and that came at 7.43 with Felicity Gregory and Anthony Booth linking up to have Karl Nicholson get Manchester on the board. Once the first goal went in for Mayhem, it saw the floodgates open and had the hosts scoring four more unanswered goals in the opening period.

Karl Nicholson doubled their lead 84 seconds later for 2-0, with captain Mark Colquitt assisting on the effort before Anton Tomlinson scored his first of the season at 10.12 for 3-0, with Felicity Gregory picking up her second assist of the game. Anthony Booth then scored twice in 14 seconds, with the first coming on the powerplay, with Lucas Thomas serving a teeing penalty for Sheffield.

From the extra man advantage, it saw Karl Nicholson and Mark Colquitt assisting the Manchester man for 4-0 at 13.20. Fourteen seconds later, and Booth had made it 5-0 at 13.34, with Tom Kimm adding his name to the scorers’ sheet by picking up an assist on the goal to give the Mayhem a commanding lead in the game.

There wasn’t too much to write home about in the second period of play, with only Russ Clarke of the Steel Stings and debutant Nik Terrell both serving separate interference calls in the middle stanza.

Play in the third saw the visitors giving Damien Barker a period between the pipes, while Manchester rounded off the scoring at 39.43 through Anthony Booth's hat trick goal for 6-0, as Karl Nicholson got an assist on the goal and saw points spread throughout the side in the game.

It saw Daniel Hartshorn record his maiden shutout in only his second-ever game as netminder, meanwhile the MVP Awards when to Chris Haynes of the Steel Stings and Anton Tomlinson for Manchester. Despite the scoreline, the Mayhem were made to work hard for their victory, but now they look to try and make it back-to-back league wins against the same opponents next weekend, as the two sides will play out the return fixture at Ice Sheffield next Saturday night.
